A Daily Prayer based on John 19:17-37

Lord Jesus, We read here that each part of your crucifixion happened in order that the Scriptures might be fulfilled. We see in this the sovereign hand of your heavenly Father overseeing the events of history and confirming everything written in the word of God. The soldiers divided your garments among them and cast lots for your clothing, just as the Scriptures had prophesied. Even though the legs of the men on either side of you were broken, to hasten their deaths, not one of your bones was broken, in order that the words of Scripture regarding you as the Passover Lamb might be fulfilled. Your side was pierced with the spear of a Roman soldier in order that the ancient prophecy of Zechariah might be fulfilled. We understand by all these things that you were delivered up, not by accident or by the will of man, but by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge, by the predetermined plan of God. Lord, some today try to argue that you simply lapsed into a coma on the cross and were revived by the cool air of the tomb. And so we thank you for the eyewitness testimony of John, who saw your side pierced with a spear and saw the sudden flow of blood and water from your body, proving that you were in fact dead. May we accept John’s testimony as an eyewitness, and believe that his testimony is true. We thank you for his solemn testimony that we may have the assurance that you did indeed die on the cross. Your death completed everything your Father sent you to do, and fulfilled the Scriptures which spoke of your death and what it would accomplish. As Isaiah prophesied, you were despised and rejected by men. You were a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. You were despised and considered stricken by God. But you took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. You were pierced for my transgressions and the transgressions of ______________________, and you were crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brings us peace was upon you. It was the Lord’s will to crush you and cause you to suffer to make your life a guilt offering. You poured out your life unto death and were numbered with the transgressors. God laid on you the iniquity of us all, and for our transgression you were stricken. You bore the sin of the many so by your death you could justify the many before God. It is by your wounds that we are healed. We thank you that you finished the work of redemption on the cross, and that when you cried out, “It is finished,” the debt of our sin was paid in full. Your life was not taken from you; you laid it down for us, and when your work for our salvation was completed, you bowed your head and gave up your spirit. Pilate's inscription declared in all the languages of the civilized world that you were and are the King of the Jews. Acting with the authority that you had given him as a servant of God, Pilate declared the truth about you and refused to alter that inscription, saying, “What I have written, I have written.” We affirm that you still are the rightful King of the Jews, and I pray that you will fulfill your purpose for the Jewish people and graft them once again into the tree of faith. May all Israel be saved in accordance with your irrevocable gifts and calling. We declare that you are not only the rightful King of the Jews, but also the rightful King of all men. I pray that at your name every man, woman, and child in our city and nation will bow and that every tongue in this land will confess that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. I acknowledge that you have the name that is above every name, and I humbly bow before you as my King. It is in your name that I pray. Amen.

"There is no better way to pray according to the will of God than by praying his own word back to him. These daily prayers are crafted, as much as possible, to incorporate the very words of the Scripture."

Never before in the history of our country has America faced a moral crisis like the one before us today. The foundations of our government are crumbling right before our eyes. Our churches are abandoning God, our families are in shambles. There is only one hope for restoration - the Lord Jesus Christ.
