A Daily Prayer based on II Samuel 12:1-13:37

Lord God, We see in this story the terrible progression of the sins of sexual immorality and violence in David's family line. David's adultery became Amnon's rape and incest, and David's murder of Uriah became Absalom's murder of his own brother. Things that David did in secret were done in broad daylight by his sons. You teach us in your word that the sins of the fathers are visited on the third and fourth generations of those who follow after them, and we accept the sobering truth of that word. I pray for myself and for ______________________ , especially that you will protect us from sexual sin in all its forms. We see here, in the death of David's sons and the rape of his daughter, that you do not always spare us from the bitter consequences of our own sins. We know that you have written these things for our encouragement and instruction, and we accept the sober warnings you give us here. We see too that you do not always change your will even in response to fervent prayer and fasting. Even though David pleaded with you and spent nights lying on the ground before you, he could not change the destiny of his newborn son. I pray that we will be imitators of David's faith, and not hesitate to plead with you for things that matter to us. Yet in the end may we choose your will instead of our own, and worship you even if we do not receive from you what we intensely desire. I pray that we will imitate David's example of confession, and refuse to make excuses or to rationalize our behavior. Instead may we humbly and simply admit when we have sinned against you. I claim the promise of your word that you will do for us what you did for David, and take away our sin. And I claim your promise that you will show grace to us, as you did to David when you gave him a second son to take the place of the son who had died. You truly do not hold our sins against us forever but are quick to forgive and to show your lovingkindness to a thousand generations. We pray against the spirit of adultery, incest, and rape in our community and nation. May you release your spirit of sexual purity and fidelity into every life. We pray against the spirit of murder, revenge, and violence, and pray that you will release into every life in our land a spirit of self-control and forgiveness. We pray these things in the name of Jesus, amen.

"There is no better way to pray according to the will of God than by praying his own word back to him. These daily prayers are crafted, as much as possible, to incorporate the very words of the Scripture."

Never before in the history of our country has America faced a moral crisis like the one before us today. The foundations of our government are crumbling right before our eyes. Our churches are abandoning God, our families are in shambles. There is only one hope for restoration - the Lord Jesus Christ.
