Lord Jesus, I worship you this day as the rightful king of the Jews and as the true Son of God. We read here about what you suffered in order to accomplish salvation for us. You endured gross injustice and the heaped insults of ordinary people, religious leaders, and even common criminals without saying a word in your own defense. You refused to save yourself, even though you could have, in order to save us. Your Father forsook you at your moment of greatest pain so that because of your death in our place we could be forgiven, accepted, and received into his presence. We rejoice that at your death the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, signifying that the way into the very presence of your Father has been opened to us through your shed blood. I pray that you will fill ______________________ and me with humility and gratitude for your work on the cross, and for opening for us a new and living way to God. I pray that we will have the confidence often to draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, knowing that your shed blood has cleansed us of sin and cleansed our hearts from a guilty conscience. May we hold unswervingly to the hope that we profess in you. I pray these things in your name, amen.
